Australian GP in a few

In a few days time, the season opener of the 2012 FIA Formula One Season heads down to the historic city of Melbourne, about a thousand kilometers southwest of Sydney. I can almost hear the purring and squealing of the 2.4-liter V8s burning rubber in Albert Park as 12 teams gather this weekend, its pecking order realised come Sunday afternoon local time.

Double World Champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing defends his back-to-back titles as 5 other champions join the fray, the largest gathering in F1 history-- 7-time World Champion Michael Schumacher of Mercedes GP, Double World Champion Fernando Alonso of Scuderia Ferrari, 2007 Champion Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus F1 (formerly Renault), 2008 Champion Lewis Hamilton and 2009 Champion Jenson Button, both from McLaren Mercedes.

The favorite is still Seb followed closely by Button. Schumacher is cautious as is the 'Iceman' Raikkonen. While Lewis promises to focus, Alonso is a look of disappointment.

The biggest change to this year's cars is the stepped front nose due to FIA regulations. Only McLaren has opted to do away with what many has described as 'ugly'.

But as the weekend draws near, I will be in faraway Port Stephens chasing picturesque white beaches and sand dunes.
